The goals of the Gunnison Valley Ice Association are threefold: (1) to expand the amount of available ice time for programming and free skating, (2) to guarantee quality ice for tournaments, and (3) to provide an indoor space for use by the community for spring, summer, and fall events. The current skating complex serves program participants on two rinks and Pac-Man pond. All available time slots at the complex are currently scheduled at capacity. The Upper, or covered rink provides relatively consistent ice. The Lower, or uncovered rink does not. When the Lower rink is unavailable due to weather concerns all programs are forced to utilize the Upper rink. This results in decreased public skating time and difficult scheduling of Parks and Rec. programs. The improvement of the lower rink, along with excavating Pac-Man pond to a round shape will open up both public skating and programming time. The opportunity to conduct hockey tournaments in Gunnison has a significant impact on our winter economy. In order to draw teams to our town, we must be able to ensure that a quality ice surface is available to play on. In the past our extreme cold has caused the quality of the ice to suffer, resulting in a sub-par experience for visiting hockey players, and delaying tournament play. A refrigerated rink will solve the issues faced in the past, and encourage visiting teams to continue to participate in tournaments in Gunnison resulting in a significant impact on the local economy. Finally, the new enclosed facility would be available as a large, enclosed event center during the 7 months per year that the rink will not be frozen. Craft shows, our car show, and other events would be able to use the enclosed space.
